Halloween Movie Month 2 [Planet Terror]

The Grindhouse movies are some of the best modern horror, thriller, action movies of the past decade. Planet Terror, the only horror film out of the four, being written and directed by the great Robert Rodriguez was an awesome touch. Also putting together an ensemble cast and working with a very entertaining plot-line, this movie was destined to be one helluva movie. It felt like I was back in the exploitation film era going into a strip club whenever I watch this.

We open Planet Terror with a rousing saxophone piece while Cherry Darling (Rose McGowan), a go-go dancer, dances her final dance in a rural Texas town. She leaves and reaches The Bone Shack, a BBQ joint owned by JT Hague (Jeff Fahey) were she runs into her ex-boyfriend El Wray (Freddy Rodriguez). Meanwhile a chemical engineer, Abby (Naveen Andrews) and the Lt. Muldoon (Bruce Willis) lead US army, are making a deal that goes south as a airborne toxin is released at hits town. All the while, the newly infected people are being treated at the local hospital by a bitter doctor couple William and Dakota Block (Josh Brolin and Marley Shelton).  As the infection spreads these people and other survivors must band together to survive this mass zombie outbreak!

I really love this movie. It's one of those flicks I've seen at least eight times and every time I love it. The story isn't the greatest, it pretty standard, but it sucks you in. The acting and dialogue are where this movie shines. Josh Brolin and Marley Shelton interactions as well as Freddy Rodriguez and Rose McGowan  are phenomenal. The music is epic as well, sets the tone for the movie and has that dirty, grimey, awesome feel to it. The filming style is amazing too. It makes me feel like it was filmed in the 70s an even the missing reel scene was an amazing touch to this. Finally the horror aspect. It's so over the top it works. The blood looks real and goopy and the jump scares work well. The kills look awesome and the zombie are the early era slow moving zombies. All the aspects of this are amazing.

I don't think there's much more I can say that I haven't already said about this movie. Everything is great, from the filming  actors an acting to the scares, gore and kills. This is one of the best horror films of the modern era and the best Grindhouse movie to date. Do yourself a favor and watch this awesome movie.

Halloween Movie Month [Scream]

Now I've always liked the Scream series and earlier this year I went through all three (seen the first one a couple times before) before Scream 4 came out. Since I'm not reviewing 2/3 this month I can tell you that while it was a downhill progression between two and three but they were still solid. My thoughts on Scream 4 when I review it later this month. But Scream is where Wes Craven's crazy series began. It tells the story of  Sidney Prescott and her life nearly a year after her mother was raped and murdered. The town is in an uproar because of a masked person calling a girls house, asking her a series of questions about horror movies and then kills the girl and her boyfriend. I've always loved this movie. Funny story, the second time I watched it, it was on a local station and edited and stuff. I got a kick out of it cause the programming that day was bring sponsored by Children's Tylenol. The kills are sudden quick and look good. The acting by the cast is surprisingly good, I love the opening and the final scenes so much. Along with the acting, the writing for this is awesome. I usually don't point it out, cause these are horror movies, but it's great and the horror movie rules are genius. Anywho I love this movie. Actually it's, in my opinion, one of the best modern horror films ever made. The kills, acting, humor, and story are all original and pretty damn great. Go watch it, you won't be disappointed.
