Halloween Movie Month 2 [Evil Dead 2]

I'll start off by telling you that Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn is a retcon. So forget some of the things you saw and learned in Evil Dead. But don't discount it. It's still a great movie. Raimi had to smudge some things so he could turn this into the trilogy he wanted. Fine by me, I still live Raimi, Campbell and this b-movie horror series.

We start of Evil Dead 2 in the same cabin from the first movie. Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) and his girlfriend Linda (Denise Bixler) are having a romantic vacation in what they think is an abandoned cabin. While in there, Ash plays a tape of an archaeology professor reciting passages from the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis aka The Book of the Dead. The words unleash an evil force that kills and then possesses Linda and Ash has to decapitate her. Afterward Ash is briefly possessed but dawn breaks and he's released. Meanwhile said professors daughter, Annie (Sarah Berry) and her research partner Ed are heading to the cabin Ash is at. They have to have help from two townspeople, Jake and bobby Joe, to get to the cabin as the bridge leading there is out. By the time they get there Ash has severed his hand which had gotten possessed and night is about to fall. What horrors will await the group as they try to survive the night and not become, dead by dawn.

I loved this just as much as the first. Probably for most of the same reasons. All of them being Raimi's writing and Bruce Campbell's acting. Bruce Campbell is a God and none of you can convince me otherwise. I think this could also be the funniest scary movie I've ever seen. The possessed bodies, while gory, look hilarious for the time and the scenes where Ash is fighting with his hand and then trying to kill it after he severs it are a riot. This movie is not without scares, if you believe in spirits and possession you could get a nice jump out of people being taken over. There's those "BOO Imma try and make you jump" moments as well in this. So it keeps the old feel of horror amidst all the blood. Oh boy is there a ton of blood, gore and killing in this movie. I love every second of it. Between decapitations and stomping on peoples heads, to fountains of blood pouring out of the walls and floor. This is chock full of everything a gore-head could like. Finally the writing is stupidly superb as it fills in the new story of Ash without detracting from the Necronomicon and cabin aspect ALL WHILE in the end still setting up for Army of Darkness.

All in all this is an 80s Sam Raimi horror flick. You're gonna get tons of blood, B-movie quality, good writing, some scares and a lot of laughs. I love it and if you couldn't tell from reading the rest of this, anything Raimi or Campbell related I'll give a shot. And so should you! Cause these first two movies of the Evil Dead series are perfect viewing experiences for a month such as this.

Halloween Movie Month [Drag Me To Hell]

Finally another Sami Raimi flick! Score. If you've kept up all month you know I love The Evil Dead. But this is after he got mega huge with the Spiderman trilogy (though he wrote it before them). It follows the story of Christine, a loan officer at a bank. She's trying to get a promotion, and when an older woman who can't pay her house loan comes in, she denies her. The old woman goes psycho and places a curse on Christine. Now her and her boyfriend Clay, who is skeptical about all this supernatural mumbo jumbo, try to find answers about what's really going on with Christine before it's too late. Now, I know a lot of people who think this is a laughable attempt at horror, but this is just Sam Raimi. The over the top gore (there some in this PG-13 flick), the humor, the supernatural  aspects, and the make you jump out of your seats moments. I actually like the acting in this, always wanted Justin Long to do good and this is one of the movies I like him in. Also Alison Lohman and Dileep Rao do a good job in this as well. To me most of the freaky stuff happens with the old bat who goes nuts and the end scene with the (small spoiler) seance. The humor, especially with Long is good, and that gives this points for me. The make you jump scares parts work well and the music accompanying it is good too. I've always liked this movie, and a couple of years ago when I first watched it I knew I liked it as a horror flick. Between Sam Raimi's plot, the acting, humor, scares, etc in the movie. I'll always recommend this to people, just one of them movies I really like.

Halloween Movie Month [The Evil Dead]

So this is another movie I watched about a month ago (I swear I get to movies I've watched on the day soon enough haha). I've seen the series before and it's one I forgot to add to my list of top horror films in my introduction to what I'm doing this month. Sam Raimi, most of ya'll probably know him from Spiderman 1-3, has a flair for horror. It's how he basically started and it's in his blood. The Evil Dead follows the story of three couples who decide to take a trip up an old cabin in the woods that one of them bought. Upon arriving   strange things start happening after they explore the house and find an old mans tape (who did supernatural research) and play it. Now it becomes a fight for survival against seen and unseen forces. Now if you like blood and gore, like me, this movie is straight up your alley. Raimi spares no expense for gushing, squirting, bleeding, pooling, covering, and whatever other way blood can happen. Also, aside from all the other "kids", Bruce "Motherfuckin'" Campbell owns as the protagonist Ash. If you don't know Bruce, shame on you. He's a pro at doing B-movie horrors and also plays Sam Axe in one of my favorite shows Burn Notice. In this movie he acts as well as possible and when he's given a chance to be funny admist all that's going on, it works. Also the 80s horror music is quite chilling and surprisingly great. Works when they're a chase or death, and kept me on my toes. The acting is as good as it can get all around, the story is original, the death, blood, and gore are great, and it was a fun supernatural horror film to watch. Here's another one that's on the ole Netflix instant too. Go watch it.
