Halloween Movie Month 2 [The Cabin in the Woods]

This was one of the horror movies I was excited for this year. Much like I was excited for Insidious last year. I think this is the newest movie on my list, until I see Paranormal Activity 4 that is. You may be wondering why the now mega-star Chris Hemsworth is in here too. Well this movie has been delayed for almost two-years now (which is why the poster says October 2011), and boy am I glad it finally got released.

We open The Cabin in the Woods with technicians Gary Sitterson (Richard Jenkins) and Steve Hadley (Bradley Whitford) with a fellow co-worker Wendy Lin (Amy Acker), prepare for an operation of some sort. One of many going on around the world. Meanwhile five college students, Dana Polk (Kristen Connolly), Jules Louden (Anna Hutchinson) and her boyfriend Curt Vaughan (Chris Hemsworth), Holden McCrea (Jesse Williams) and Marty Mikalski (Fran Kranz), head up to an isolated cabin in the woods for a vacation. After their first day of "fun in the sun", they come home and have a kegger and play truth or dare. [Some SPOILERS Ahead] During the game the door to the cellar is triggered by said techs. We know the kids are being tested but they have no clue. They go down into the cellar to find a metric ton of creepy horror type trinkets, books and collectibles. Dana reads a passage that was written in Latin from a mega old book. It allows the techs to trigger the type of "horror movie" these students will play out. But it goes beyond that when they fight back and discover an ancient secret that will not only kill them, but perhaps the world.

This was a great movie. It seemed fresh because it was. The music and acting were good enough (it's really hard for me to find complaints with these in ANY move I watch), and it was nice to see Chris Hemsworth in a role "before" he was a mega star. Also I really like Kristen Connolly as the lead and hopefully she'll do another horror film. She has that knack for it. Can I point out the Joss Whedon is the man too? Dude has a gift for writing good stories. The horrors, though staged really felt like a traditional horror flick. There was blood, gore and some scares. Plus getting to see monsters and psychopaths go ape shit on people was amazing. All what I want to see in these movies. The story was great too. Probably the best thing this movie has going for it. While the main part of the movie, messing with the students, is good clean fun horror. Well as clean and fun as can be for a viewer. The over arching aspect of the [SPOILERS] whole game being a trial to appease ancient Gods [SPOILERS] was a great twist.

I'm really glad this movie did good with critics and I'm really glad it finally got released. I'd been looking forward to it and it did not disappoint. Original story, great kills (and killers) and a modern horror with a new twist you can really get into. This movie is definitely worth your time.
