Halloween Movie Month 2 [Hostel]

Hostel is one of those movies you forget about till you watch it again I think. Eli Roth is one of the better, big name, horror movie makers and Hostel is one of the best written horror movies I think I've ever seen. Couple that with the fact you have Quentin Tarantino's seal of a approval, you know this is gonna be pretty damn good.

Hostel follows the story of two college students from California, Paxton and Josh (Jay Hernandez and Derek Richardson), and their friend Ollie (Eyþór Guðjónsson), from Iceland, as they backpack across Europe. After a night of partying, getting high and wasted they meet a man named Alexei (Lubomir Bukovy) who tells them of a place near Bartislava that has the most beautiful looking girls they can imagine. The trio board a train and head that way the next day. On the train ride they meet a strange Dutch businessman (Jan Vlasák) who eventually puts his hand on Josh's leg. It sends Josh into a rage and the businessman leaves. They check into a hostel in a small Slovak village and meet two girls, Natayla and Svetlana (Barbara Nedeljáková and Jana Kaderabkova), they'll be rooming with. They go out on the town that night and Josh, who takes a breather, is saved by the Dutch businessman from a group of children.  They all end up with the girls from the room and the receptionist. When they wake up Ollie is gone and they can't get a hold of him. As they walk around town strange things begin to happen to them and people start to stare, they think they see Ollie but it turns out not to be him. The next night Josh leaves the club early and wakes up in the most unimaginable place. Ollie and now Josh are both missing. Can Paxton escape the fate that befell his two friends and make it out of Europe in one piece, or will this town in Slovak be the final stop on this vacation?

I love this flick and this viewing reminded me why. The story, based off of things that unfortunately happen and have happened, would scare the shit out of me if it ever did happen to me. So when a story can do that to me, the movie has done it's job. The writing, Eli Roth wrote this, is awesome and there really wasn't another movie like at the time. Even till now it's pretty stand alone. The plot is original as well and does this movie well. The acting and kills, blood and gore are all immaculate as well. Ollie is hilarious and Paxton and Josh are both characters you can get into and invest in. While the flashes of kills and then the actual "kill" rooms are fantastic and gory. All the things I want out of a horror flick and some of the best kills and torture I've seen in a movie.

Eli Roth really made a good movie here. Beyond the horror aspect this is a quality written and acted movie as well. If you haven't seen this, do yourself a favor and watch this. Be prepared for some brutal moments though. If you're like me and you're going back to it again, don't fear cause I think it holds up really well. Hostel really does deliver.
