It's no secret at this point that I love the SAW franchise. So when I heard this was from the writers of the second trilogy, I knew I had to see it. Plus people that I talked to who had seen it, liked it and the reviews online were generally positive. Got me even more excited for this trapped filled house of horrors and the man known as The Collector.
We open The Collector with a man named Arkin (Josh Stewart), he's an ex-con who works with a contracting company. They are doing remodeling work on a house owned by the Chase family; Michael, Victoria, Jill and Hannah (Michael Reilly Burke, Andrea Roth, Madeline Zima and Karley Scott Williams). Arkin's ex-wife is in debt with a loan shark, Roy (Michael Wisdom), so to protect his ex-wife Lisa (Daniella Alonso) and their daughter Cindy (Haley Pullos), Arkin plans on breaking into the Chase's house. They have a rare gem worth more than enough to get them out of debt with the loan shark. Arkin gets there the night they have supposedly left on a vacation, he starts to break into the safe inside the house. He hears a scream through the vents and walks back through a house and encounters a series of traps you would hardly think imaginable. It becomes a mad dash to survive this now trap filled house, The Man (Juan Fernandez de Alarcon) and save the family that is still trapped inside.
The first time I watched this with my friend when I nabbed it on DVD. He's not a huge horror fan, and afterward he said it was a pretty solid movie. Same with the second person I watched it with, she said it was alright as well. It really held up on the second viewing for me too. To start off, the music, mood of the film and actual filming of it were all good. The story was pretty fresh compared to others from the past decade, which was nice. The acting was really good and I don't usually say that about horror flicks. Josh Stewart and, the ever great, Michael Wisdom were a breath of fresh air in a movie like this. As well as The Collector himself, a giant, mysterious, imposing, figure that commands the screen whenever he's on there. The kills and traps were all pretty awesome in this movie too. From a dining room floor filled with bear traps to a room strung up with razor thin barbed-wire. All the traps are interesting and and make the kills look awesome.
I still really like this film and hope they do a follow-up to it after the way it ended. But it's also one of those decent movies that could get ruined by a bad sequel. As I said the acting, plot and traps were all great in this movie and it's one that holds up to multiple viewings. If you haven't seen this yet, give it a shot. You might be pleasantly surprised.
